All in all, I wrote ten different versions of the query letter.  I researched dozens of agents, and finally settled on about fifteen who were looking for new authors in the mystery genre.  I read their biographies on their webpages, and Googled them independently to see what organizations they were part of, or what other professional achievements they had earned.

I tailored each letter to the specific agent I was writing too.  I kept them ultra-professional, but where it was appropriate, dropped in a separate line that referenced something additional.  Something not related to my query.  Something…just a small note…to let them know I wasn't blindly querying every agent in the industry.
